It is the year 447 BC. Thirty years ago, war destroyed most of Athens. The most important place in Athens, a high mountain called the Acropolis, was destroyed.

Many Athenians are now talking about rebuilding the Acropolis. Pericles, a leader in the Assembly, would like to build a large and beautiful temple called the Parthenon. This temple will honor Athena, the goddess of war and protector of Athens.

Many Athenians agree with Pericles. They say that the Parthenon will honor Athena and will create jobs for the poor citizens of Athens. They feel it is very important to make Athens into a beautiful city. Others say that the Parthenon will cost too much money, which will anger other city-states.

As a member of the Assembly, you must vote on this important issue. You will speak to ordinary Athenians and learn their opinions on building the Parthenon. Then you must decide for yourself: Should Athens build the Parthenon?
